Alongside the main large scale exhibitions within the yearlong art event Globale at ZKM Zentrum für Kunst und Medien Karlsruhe we have also been commissioned to design a number of additional micro architectural elements as autonomous satellites for supporting programmes and side events of the Globale within the premises at the ZKM Library. The complementary project comprises a small arena with about 30 seats housing a small event space for talks, lectures or other performances as well as a small shelving tower for book display, whose base also serves as a bench inviting visitors to rest or to browse books. Both elements have different functions but are polygonally designed in relation to framework structures with a strong link to our conceptual design of the modular exhibition system for the Globale. The polychromatic finish of primary RGB colours for the timber frame structures enhances the visibility of the installations, stimulating discourse and reflecting the liveliness of the events with their focus on media research and screen-based art.
